Float planes are to Alaska what cars are to the lower 48. Only a tiny percent of Alaska is connected by roads. Travel by winter can be done with either a snow-machine, ATV, dogsled or air because of frozen lakes, swamps and ground. During warmer months, it's almost all done by plane. Alaska is basically a huge swamp interspersed by lakes and periodic dry land. The float plane is god. Karen's Dog Truck I also have this as a gif animation here: http://s742.photobucket.com/albums/xx65/CathyMillerBurgoyne/gif%20animations/?action=view¤t=Impactgif.gif Impact Last spring I went on a canoe trip around Long Lake in Willow, Alaska. There was an abandoned dock with decaying stairs on a hillside leading down to the dock. I think things that have been left behind and forgotten have a special kind of beauty as they are slowly reclaimed by the elements. When I find something interesting, I will frequently go back from time to time to see how much of an object is still intact and how much has vanished. That's the beauty of Alaska. With such a harsh climate, we are only temporary blips on the landscape and everything manmade all goes back to nature eventually. Abandoned |
